5 Must-Have Health Apps for Seniors

Jason Collier - 19th Aug 2018 [updated 26th Aug 2019] - Mobile Health

The developing mobile technologies have brought about the rise in mobile health. Mobile health is the perfect tool to benefit senor citizens. Health apps for seniors are being utilised to promote healthier, longer and more prosperous lives.

There are many apps which are dedicated to making the lives of seniors easier, but the health apps which assist seniors in managing their health are arguably the most important!

According to Guide For Seniors, 7 out of 10 adults track at least one health indicator, like blood pressure or blood glucose levels, daily. However, 49% of these adults store the information mentally. Only 7% use a mobile app to keep track of the data!

The benefits that come from using an app as a form of remote healthcare are endless. An app can store a huge amount of data on its servers, which is unmatchable by a human brain. Apps also have the ability to present the data graphically to show the user certain trends or send the data to a healthcare professional for remote monitoring. Certain apps can be paired to work with medical devices too!

Today’s senior citizens are embracing mobile technology by using mobile apps more than ever before. Apps should be used as a tool for senior citizens to stay healthy. Here are 5 must-have health apps for seniors (in no particular order).

1. Medisafe – Pill & Med Reminder

Medication sitting unused in the cabinet doesn’t do any good for anyone, be it the forgetful patient, the pharmacist, the prescribing physician, or the pharma company that developed it!

Patients who are trying to manage certain health conditions take numerous different pills at various stages in the day. It is difficult to remember details such as the type of medication to be taken, the dosage and the time that it must be taken. This is where Medisafe sweeps in to save the day! It will give seniors a better chance of complying with their strict medication programs.

Medisafe benefits patients by educating them about their medication and helping them through their treatment. It also benefits physicians by allowing them to monitor their patients remotely. Medisafe boasts an 8.4% improvement in adherence for hypertensive patients and a 19.5% improvement in adherence for those with hyperlipidemia. It has also been proven to reduce systolic blood pressure for Stage 2 hypertensive users by 25.3 mmhg. Numbers don’t lie – this app is good!

5. Stress Scan

StressScan is an app that seniors can use to test their stress levels and monitor their heart rate. This can be done by placing the index finger on the phone’s built-in camera lens. StressScan will analyse the waveform of the heartbeat, generating a stress score between 1 and 100.

The technology used by Stress Scan is based on heart rate variability analysis, which is well known in the field of autonomic nervous system research. It is medically recognised that the balance of the autonomic nervous system can become disordered through stress. This causes a certain amount of variability between consecutive heartbeats which StressScan measures to calculate the stress score.

This app will allow senior citizens to be more aware of their daily stress, allowing them to manage themselves physically and mentally, reducing the risk of certain chronic conditions related to stress.
